Exterior Makeover ... So far
Well this is our Exterior makeover so far! (español abajo)
From the minute we saw this house I thought “this would look amazing in white” I honestly don’t know what style of house this is on the outside, it’s a mix of ranch house with something else lol, but we are surrounded by trees and I knew I wanted it to pop. Don’t get me wrong the brick was actually very pretty and classic and the more we lived it the more it grew on me lol, but it just looked a bit gloomy to me, and it’s a cool (different) house it deserved to stand out hehe.
Before moving we got a new roof and decided to go with the black roof in hopes of sticking to our plan of painting it white. And here it is:
What we did:
- Painted brick,
- Replaced damaged and painted sighting,
- New Roof: we did get lucky with the roof, the sellers actually filed a claim with their insurance to get the roof replaced before closing. And they let us pick the color.
- Painted Front door: we hope that down the road we can replace the door with a new metal door with glass, for that modern vibe. We actually considered keeping it green like a statement but as soon as we painted the house white the green just didn’t work.
- Landscaping: we didn’t do much because it was expensive, it’s also winter and everything would probably die lol but we did do gravel in the front of the house, to clean it up and I love it! We still need to do the backyard around the pool, but I do want some grass there so we will wait (and save) for spring lol, But we have been cleaning up some trees and before moving in we cut a couple trees that were too close to the pool and have the full view.
- Pool: The pool is an 80s shape but was in very good condition, so we just re-surfaced and fixed the equipment, maybe in a few years we’ll update it.
- Switched entry lights: Garage ones will match but I was only able to get 2 out of 5 that I need, the rest are on backorder. So, I’m waiting to install until I have them all haha. But they are the matching set to the front porch.
- Added greens: Font door potted trees are Blue Point Junipers
- Painted Garage door: we did this right after the roof was finished and we closed on the house, the garage doors were brown and matched the old roof
Paint used:
- Exterior brick: Sherwin Williams exterior paint (for brick) in Alabaster. Masonry primer first (VERY IMPORTANT IF PAINTING BRICK)
- Trims and garage: Sherwin Williams exterior paint eggshell finish in Tricorn
- Front Door: Sherwin Williams Exterior Semi-gloss in Tricorn
Tips for painting brick:
- Use masonry paint and primer. Brick needs to breathe especially porous brick.
- When painting exterior white consider how bright and how much direct sunlight your house gets. If your house gets super direct sunlight painting white might make it too bright (you don’t want to blind your neighbors) consider instead an off white warmer tones or even greyish undertones. Ours is surrounded by trees and could take good white like alabaster. But even though alabaster is a warmer white it looks pretty white. Each house will show color differently.
- Hire someone who knows what they're doing
- You will need to pressure wash the exterior first, because brick has crevices, and is porous you will need to get any dirt or debris out before painting.
- You will have to paint with spray, in order to get the paint in all the right places, spray is the way to go
- Limewash vs Paint: we actually went back and forth with this option, limewash/white wash options are good if you're not sure about painting, it's not a permanent processs. The best way
i can explain this is it's like bleaching your house lol but it does wear off with time. In the end we knew that the white look is what we wanted. So why pay for something now and then have to pay again later. Paint is permanent, but the white/lime wash is a cool finish too like a more rustic vibe.
We still have a lot to do inside and outside the house but it’s something I actually like, it means we have some projects to have fun with in the future. But after the big stuff, those are fun!

Bueno pues asi va el makeover del exterior de la casa
Desde la primera vez que vi esta casa pensé se vería increíble de blanco la verdad no sé ni qué estilo es la casa por fuera, una mezcla de “ranch house” con algo jaja. Está rodeada de árboles y con más razón quería que resaltara aunque si el ladrillo rojo si me gusta y entre más vivíamos la casa como que más me encariñado con el. Pero al mismo tiempo en el ladrillo rojo se me hacía que se veía un poco oscura y no resaltaba y creo que es una casa muy diferente y original que merece lucir.
Antes de mudarnos logramos cambiar el techo y decidimos ponerlo en negro o casi negro para nuestro plan en el futuro de pintar la casa de Blanco.
Qué hicimos:
- Pintamos ladrillo
- Reemplazamos y pintamos vistas, madera y marcos del exterior
- techo nuevo: tuvimos mucha suerte con el techo porque los vendedores lograron que su seguro reemplazará el techo justo antes de cerrar y nos dejaron escoger el color entonces salimos ganando con techo nuevo
- pintamos la puerta principal: en un futuro nos gustaría cambiarla por completo por una más moderna tipo de metal con vidrio o algo así pero por ahora le dimos un segundo aire a la puerta original
- jardinería: la verdad no hicimos mucho porque el presupuesto que nos dieron era un poco caro y entrando a los meses de invierno significa que lo que sembramos no se iba a dar bien o se nos iba a morir entonces decidimos sólo poner piedras en el frente para darle un look más limpio y de hecho me encanto! Todavía nos falto la parte de atrás de la casa y al rededor de la alberca, pero ahí si se me antoja poner un poco de pasto también pero creo que para eso nos tenemos que esperar a la primavera (sirve que ahorramos un poco jaja) Lo que es que hemos estado limpiando los arboles y arbustos, y antes de mudarnos cortamos un par de arboles que estaban muy cerca de la alberca y para despejar la vista.
- Arbolitos: Compre un par de arbolitos que creo que son de las familias de los pinos o algo así en inglés son Blue Point Junipers. Se supone que son resistentes a los cambios de clima y a los venados (ahora si canijos) pero todavia no les consigo macetas.
- Pintamos Puerta del garage: las puertas del garage estaban muy desgastadas en tono café muy parecido al tono original del techo. Estas las pintamos Justo después de comprar la casa, ya que se había instalado el techo nuevo.
- Lamparas de exterior: cambiamos las lamparas de la entrada y planeamos cambiar las de afuera del garage. Pero solo habian en inventario 2 de las 5 que necesitamos, entonces me espero a que lleguen esas. pero son el mismo juego a las de la entrada.
Nuestra pintura:
- Ladrillo Exterior: Sherwin Williams pintura para exterior en color ALABASTER (pide y explícales que es para ladrillo antes de comprarla) - Primer para “masonry” es muy importante usar primer que si sea para ladrillo
- Bordes, Marcos y garage: Sherwin Williams para exterior, color TRICORN en acabado “egg shell” (perdon no me se bien los detalles en español pero este es más mate)
- Puerta Principal: Sherwin Williams exterior semi-gloss en TRICORN
tips pasa pintar ladrillo:
- contrata a alguien que sepa
- Usa pintura para ladrillo y para “masonry” (en inglés)
- Es necesario usas primer
- cuando pintes el exterior de tu casa considera que tanta luz o que tan directo le da el sol. Cada casa absorbe y refleja los colores diferente. Por ejemplo si tú cada está siempre en el rayo del sol, no uses un blanco demasiado blanco o vas a dejar ciegos a los vecinos. Prueba un blanco más cálido o con tonos grises. Nuestro tono ALABASTER es un blanco cálido pero al rato del sol se ve bastante blanco, pero ayuda que tenemos mucho árbol.
- Tienes que lavar a presion el ladrillo antes de pintar, ya que el ladrillo es poroso y tiene grietas necesitas sacar todo el polvo y cositas que pueda tener pegado ahi.
- Se tiene que pintar con spray, con rodillo vas a sufrir y la pintura no va entrar bien entre los ladrillos.
- White/Lime wash vs Pintura: este es una tecnica que o estoy muy segura como le dicen en español, pero es una tecnica que es como si le echaras cloro a tu casa, aclara pero no es permanente. se deslava con el tiempo, es buena opcion si no estas convencido con pintar tu casa. nosotros lo consideramos pero al final el look que de verdad queriamos era con pintura blanca entonces porque pagar doble (si lo haciamos ahorita y luego en unos años pintar) si es mas barato que pintar.
Todavía nos queda mucho por hacer afuera y adentro pero es algo que de hecho me gusta! Tener proyectos para el futuro. Después de todo lo grande que hicimos esos serán proyectos muy divertidos.
