5 tips for finding your perfect hair stylist
We all know that finding a good stylist and “clicking” with them is like finding your spouse ... (ok almost lol) but it is all about trust, liking their work, liking them, and everything in between. I mean you’re literally putting your hair in their hands and for most women our hair is a part of us. And after big mistakes and disappointments we usually find someone we absolutely love! I went through a couple stylists, and although they were all amazing they all had something that ended up not working out for me. The first one, was too busy with life (understandable) that booking an appointment with her meant booking 2 weeks in advance (minimum and no she wasn't a celebrity stylist, she just didn't have help, she opened her own place and did everything herself, and would take very long with each client) Which I don't mind when I'm scheduling my routine touch ups, but the last two times she did my hair the color wasn't perfect and had uneven patches, so I had to go back in to get it fixed. When you're not happy with your hair and want it fixed as soon as possible the worst thing they can tell you is "Come back in 3 weeks" after a while this just wasn’t working for me.
Next and god knows I love this girl (Becca) was perfect! she knew exactly what I wanted and would always squeeze me in if I ever needed a correction (no matter how busy she was) and she was in San Antonio but she actually moved away to Nashville, and unfortunately that’s not a city a trend to visit (ever ... although I would like to, ladies if you're there check her out.
Next, this girl was amazing but felt her style wasn’t for me and slightly out of my budget, just felt in this case her style was not the perfect fit, making the price not worth it. And finally by a twist of faith that I started going to LA more often for work, and I found Kim, at Nine Zero One, and in my opinion match made in heaven! Super sweet girl, is a perfectionist, will pay attention to all the tiny things. and can read my mind since i'm not the best at explaining what I want lol.
Again many factors came in to play and this is what I learned throughout my ordeal, 5 tips for finding your stylist:
1.- Work: of course their work is important! And now a days we’re lucky to have social media and that stylists have and share their work on their business accounts. Although I wouldn’t solely rely on social media, like everything else on these platforms, results can be altered, edited and even faked, but it's great to get a feel for their style. it does help but also ask around. Also when you take a specific photo of what you like keep in mind that each hair is different even if you may have the same darker brown natural color. Each hair picks up different shades. A good stylist will adapt this and not give you the same formula as she does for all her clients.
2.- recommendation: ok a bit hand in hand with work but it always helps to ask people you know (and like their style) where they get their hair done. This could be a friend or even a blogger online you like. 3.- Budget: in the end we all have our budget, and it is good to take it into account. Including how often you need to get your hair done. For example; If they charge you $500 but you only get your hair done once a year, well maybe it’s not that bad. But if you’re one to get constant touch ups ... $500x6 or x 12 (at least) might be going over your budget. Another example is I get a Balayage which on me lasts longer and don't need to touch up as often, so i spend a bit more per session, unlike my mom who has full color and highlights, she needs regular touch up and pays less per session. But something I’ve learned is that usually if you want a specific hair style (especially the newer techniques) you may have to pay a bit more, and it is worth it. 4.- Be strong; one of the biggest mistakes made is not being strong enough to say, “I don’t like it” when they’re done, and then we’re stuck feeling uncomfortable and having to do color corrections or paying double to get it fixed (yea been there) or even trusting someone you don’t really know and letting them do what they want.
5.- Personality: believe it or not clicking with your stylist is SO important! So many stylists are or can be divas and think they know you better than you know yourself and will want to do only what they want on you. I remember this happened to my mom with her stylist from years ago. Not sure how but the guy insisted my mom would look great with “warmer” color ... yea he went full red head on her (my mom has always had either chocolate brown hair or light golden highlights) she was so mad! And of course had to live with it for the longest week of her life lol. So if you feel the stylist is being pushy and only wanting to do what he/she wants and not listening just ask him/her for a nourishing treatment and walk out. We've all been there "just a trim" -leaves the salon bald. lol Do you have any hair stylist horror stories? Please share them!
Casi todas sabemos que encontrar a tu estilista es casi casi como encontrar a tu pareja (jajá bueno casi) pero todo se trata de confianza, que te guste su trabajo, y que te caigan bien, y todo lo demás. Literal estas poniendo tu cabeza en sus manos, y como mujer sabemos que nuestro pelo es un gran parte de nosotros. Después de varios errores y mala suerte normalmente llegamos con la persona perfecta para nosotros.
¡A mi claro que me paso esto! Pase por varias personas hasta llegar con mi favorita. Aquí les dejo el resumen de porque no funciono con ellas jajá;
La primera, con la que fui con años decidió salirse del salón grande en donde trabajaba para abrir su propio. Lo cual me dio mucho gusto por ella, pero a la larga paso que como no tenía la ayuda que tenía en los otros salones tardaba más en cada trabajo. Y las últimas veces que fui con ella no me encantaba mi color, y cuando le pedí si me hacía un espacio para corregirlo me dijo “si, puedes venir en 3 semanas” #NoPorfavor si alguna vez les han echado a perder el pelo, saben que lo último que quieres es tener que vivir con ese error. En fin, eso me canso, y decidí buscar alguien que tuviera más tiempo (y que no la regara tanto que me terminaba costando más) Así llegue con la siguiente, recomendada por una amiga que paso por lo mismo. Le hicieron unos rayos espantosos (bueno eran más manchas que rayos jajá) y esta chava la atendió de volada y se lo corrigió. La amo! Súper buena, linda y si por algo no quedabas conforme siente te hacia un huequito para corregir lo antes posible, ¿lo malo? Que se fue a vivir a Nashville, y pues ese no es un lugar al que viajo (aunque se me antoja) pero si andan por allá se las recomiendo.
Después de eso empecé a ir a Los Ángeles un poco más por trabajo y decidí probar uno de mis salones favoritos que siempre veo en Instagram #PorQueNo y aquí si muchos de sus estilistas o son famosos ellos o tienen clientes famosos. La verdad mi experiencia en el salón fue increíble pero la chava que me pinto, aunque muy linda y muy buena nada mas no fue mi estilo, no fue exactamente lo que yo quería y termino siendo bastante caro jajá. Y por fin por obra del destino en el mismo Salón di con Kim la chava que me ha estado pintando el pelo desde el verano pasado. Y wow, es un amor, y en automático entiende lo que quiero y tiene las técnicas de lo que me gusta a mí. En fin, ¡después de todo eso aquí les paso mis 5 tips para no tardarse tanto en encontrar a su estilista perfecto!
1.- Su trabajo: creo que, de lo más importante, es que sean buenos en especial para lo que te gusta a ti. Hay muchas que se especializan en algo en particular. Ahora tenemos la suerte de que muchos ponen su trabajo en redes sociales y es fácil ver si te gusta. Aunque no siempre podemos confiar lo que vemos por ahí. Pero ten en mente que, aunque la foto que te gusto tengo el pelo parecido al tuyo, todos somos diferentes y los colores agarran muy diferentes. Alguien bueno ajustara su fórmula de acuerdo a cada persona.
2.- Recomendaciones: ok un poco de la mano con el punto número uno, pero a veces lo mejor es pedir las recomendaciones de una amiga o conocida o hasta de alguna influncer que sigas en línea, que te den su opinión honesta.
3.- Presupuesto: Al final todos tenemos nuestro presupuesto y sabemos lo que podemos gastar o no. Toma en cuenta la frecuencia con las que iras con tu estilista. A lo mejor el precio por visita no se te hace caro, pero considera que tan seguido necesitaras retoques. Por ejemplo, yo me hago Balayage porque me dura meses con un look natural. Entonces pago un poquito más por cita, pero no voy tan seguido. En cambio, mi mama tiene tinte y luces completas de la raíz ella si tiene que ir más seguido a retoque y tiene mejor precio, paga menos por cita. Pero también he aprendido que si quieres una técnica nueva o en particular a veces vale la pena pagar un poco más. La amiga que mencioné arriba paso por esto pidió un balayage en un salón que no conocía bien la técnica y le quedo todo manchado termino pagando más por las correcciones. Aunque aquí también los estilistas tienen que ser honestos y decir “Sabes que no es mi especialidad y prefiero no hacerlo”
4.- Se Fuerte: Uno de los errores más comunes que cometemos y no alzar la voz y decir “ay me encanto” cuando en realidad no era lo que querías. Y luego no amolamos con el pelo así por un rato. Hay que saber decir “No” o “no me gusto”
5.- Personalidad: Aunque no lo creas la personalidad de tu estilista es uy importante, tienes que hacer “Click” y muchos estilistas son súper divas o creen que ellos saben más que tú en cuanto a lo que quieres o que te conocen mejor jajá a menos de que tú les digas “haz lo que tú quieras” los estilistas deben de respetar tu gusto. Esto le paso a mi mama hace muchos años, ¡de laguna forma el estilista de mi mama le necio tanto que se vería súper bien con un tono más “cálido” (en lugar de su color chocolate) y la dejo pelirroja! Y claro fue la semana más larga de su vida jajá de ahí en adelante nunca más lo dejo que la sorprendiera.
Si te toca alguien así mejor diles que solos quieres un tratamiento de hidratación y te vas. A todos nos ha pasado de que solo un despunte y sales pelona jajá.
