A Girl's Guide to Designer Bags

It’s no secret that women (ehemm me) have a weakness for fashion, and for most this weakness gravitates more towards shoes and handbags (eheem again me). I am deeply affected by this #TheStruggleIsReal. Lately I have been asked about my handbags, especially by girls looking to buy their first “it bag” or wanting to finally get their hands on that designer bag that they’ve been crushing on over for years, so I decided to write this guide for those who feel lost on what to buy.
In recent studies it has been proved that handbags are one of the best investments when in comes to accessories, at times even more than jewelry, but not all bags are worth the splurge or investment. So here’s what I’ve learned, (sometimes the hard way)
Go Classic: If this is your very first designer bag, try to stick to the classic styles like Chanel 255 (classic flap) or a boy bag. A good classic that has a friendlier price tag is the Louis Vuitton monogram speedy. Avoid going for the trending bags. I know its hard to keep up since we see “it girls” storming through trends like crazy, by the time you’ve saved up for that really cool style that has been plastered on social media, a new “it bag” comes out (I mean come on!) So choose a designer you love and pick from their classic styles.
Go Neutral: Although I’m the first to fall for a bright pink bag, I have to confess the best investment you can make is a neutral colored bag (with some exceptions, which I’ll mention further on) such as black, brown, grays or ivory. If you think black is too boring, gray is a very original neutral color or camel, both these colors go perfectly with any clothing blacks and blues included.
Although some bright colored purses like the Boy bag are very coveted, in most cases the best way to start are with neutrals. Believe me, although you may love your brand new yellow cross body, you may grow tired of always having to match your outfit to it (this is only in the beginning while you grow your collection)

Re-sale Value: I know it’s hard to imagine letting go of that gorgeous handbag you finally bought. But if you’re purchasing a good investment, you must keep in mind the brand’s and style’s resale value. This is also one of the main reasons I recommend a neutral color and a classic style. Both these categories will still be trending in a few years, if for any reason you feel the need to sell you handbag, whether for need or simply because you may want to trade up. It will be easier and better paid if it’s a classic.
No bags on Sale: I’m sorry to say but if a bag/designer goes on sale or has an outlet store, they are usually not a good investment. Again this is mainly thinking about the resale value of the bag. Think about it, if you want to sell your bag for good money, but that designer constantly goes on sale, why would anyone pay full price when they can get a brand new one on sale next season. Although if your collection is missing a new red handbag and you just need to have one, a good sale is the way to go (Saks and Neiman Marcus do it very well also Nordstrom but their products in stock vary too much, for example Nordstrom Miami sells YSL in store for shoes and bags but San Antonio doesn’t) Also not all designers on sale are a bad idea. Some only put on sale the basic lines of clothing. For example CH Carolina Herrera’s outlet store never has the classic bags on sale, they mainly move their previous clothing and shoe collection to make room for the new one.
Monogramming: Now this I’m a bit torn about, many classic bags offer monogramming when bought. Such as the Louis Vuitton and Goyard. I absolutely love how these two brands monogram, and if it’s going to be your forever handbag, go for it. But if, again in a few years you feel like you’re done with it and want to sell it or maybe pass it on to you daughter, well that’s going to be harder. It’s very difficult trying to find someone with your same initials to sell your bag to. If you’re set on having your bag customized but are hesitant about adding your initials, Vuitton’s “monogramming” doesn’t have to include any letters, you can simply add a strip of up to 3 colors on their bags and wallets.
So what are good designers to choose from? All lists in this article are in NO order in particular (so don’t think they are ranked)
Best Choices:
Chanel: Let’s be honest you can never go wrong with Chanel, but not all their styles are worth it (in my opinion) stick to their iconic Classic handbag (flap) styles or boy bag. Don’t worry this is what they do best and have many styles to choose from. I adore all their models but to start off we all need the classics (Below are the three sizes of the Chanel Classic handbag - flap ( Medium, Jumbo, Maxi - )
Louis Vuitton: I do believe LV is one of the best investments you can make, simply because their price tags on the classics are a bit more accessible than lets say Chanel, and they do maintain their resale value pretty well. If you’re buying a pre-owned bag, just make sure it’s not a fake. LV is one of the most counterfeited brands in the world. So before buying from someone compare it to an original, ask for all tags and if possible, receipt, and even stop buy a LV store and ask for the sales ladies advice, show them the pics, they’re very helpful. If you do purchase it online and it arrives and you just want to make sure its real, take in to the store and have them authenticate it. I would have to say that a must have in every purse lovers collection is a speedy! I actually have a Speedy 30 Bandoulier (Bandouliere= Shoulder strap) and I love it so much, the Bandouliere model is a bit more expensive than the regular speedy without the strap, but it all depends on how you wear it, I travel with mine a lot so a having a strap is much more convemient for me. The Neverfull tote is also a fan favorite, but keep in mind that it does not have a zipper and things tend to fly out in the car or on a plane #TrueStory ...
Hermes: Well Hermes is and will be the best investment you can ever make, their Birkins and Kelly bags tend to resale for just as much as the store price tag, sometimes even more! This is mainly because of the high demand and that many people are wait listed. The problem here is the price tag (new or used) brand new Hermes Birkin starts at around 10k. (Sigh) - Pictured Birkin 35 (not mine, on loan from very good friend <3 taken by me)
Goyard: This is a great investment and unlike others, Goyard Saint Louis tote bag is the exception to the color rule. People actually want and love to purchase this in bright colors even though they do carry black and white. The problem here is that their boutiques are harder to find. There are only 6 cities in the U.S that sell Goyard, One boutique in Mexico City and one in Sao Paulo Brazil, with the rest in Europe and Asia Check out their Store Locator HERE - (Pictured Large St Louis)
Saint Laurent (YSL): YSL is pretty new to the game but has been winning since they re-launched their styles a few years ago, what I like about them is that most of their designs are classics and don’t change much over time, they also come out with a great selection of colors each season, and the prices are not as crazy as others. My favorite is the Sac Du Jour (pictured in the Small size below - actually not that small, two smaller sizes afet this one, baby and nano)
Celine: Luggage and Phantom models. There are some smaller styles that I love too, but keep in mind that both the luggage and phantom models in a larger size are very heavy on it’s own. (Pictured: Celine Luggage)
Dior: Now, Dior is one of those classics that has not been plastered all over magazines and social media. It has come out with their J’adore line but if you look at their designs they’re one of the brands that have stayed true to themselves, and protected their classics. You will not find a Dior bag in any outlet store or on sale. My favorite: The Lady Dior bag! Gucci: So Gucci almost didn't make it into this group, because they do have outlet stores, so before purchasing a bag make sure that particular style is not going to go on sale next month. Their new collections are amazing Marmont and are breaking out of the outlet trend. In between:
Balenciaga: again Balenciaga tends to go on sale from time to time, also their super vibrant leather may fade in time.
Chloe: Now Chloe has upped its game in the last couple of years, and the only reason why it’s in this list, is because a few years ago, I did see a few Chloe bags go on sale. Also when I did some digging to see what they were going for when being sold by owners, their resell value is not that good. But it is a very good brand and purse to get. I just need to do a bit more digging to see how they keep going. But I do love their Drew Crossbody bag (pictured below)
Givenchy: I love! But most of its designs tend to go on sale, and they tend to be more of a passing trend.
Prada: Their styles don’t seem to stick around that long, meaning their classics are not that classic. Plus they do have an outlet store. But the jus launched a new crossbody that I’m obsessed with! Let’s keep an eye on it!
Fun Brands that don’t break the bank:
Not ready to commit to a big investment but still want a nice quality purse? Or maybe you want more of a work or day to day bag, that you don’t have walk around hugging it because you don’t want anything to damage it (it happens) These are my favorite brands that do this and stick to an under $500 price tag - Just keep in mind all of these go on sale very often - Brands named below are linked to their Handbag page:
Henri Bendel: this has become my favorite brand for travel bags and casual errands style bags. Meaning good quality, great styles, and a pretty nice price tag.
Tory Burch: TB has amazing leather and designs.
Coach: So coach is making its very triumphant comeback, but for so long coach’s quality and design dropped and it was the favorite brand to sell as knockoffs. And it took them a while to shake it off, so i'm still keeping my eye on them before making any decisions. Although Coach does have models that go way over the $500, most of their price tags are still below that.
Michael Kors: I am not a fan of MK, I don’t like him for the most part (sorry) and I don’t like that they pretty much copy high-end design bags. Buuut I do admit their styles are very nice and the price tag and quality are great.
Rebecca Minkoff: RM has some of the most original styles out there and the price tag rarely goes over $350. Perfect summer bags.
Kate Spade: The fun one! KS has the most fun designs; I do however think that sometimes they are overpriced when it comes to clutches and small bags. The good thing is they have an outlet store and offer discounts and sales very often.
There isn’t really a bad choice when it comes to bags, because it’s all about personal style and taste. I wrote this post thinking more as investment pieces, and because I know it can be hard deciding where your savings are going to. Hope you find this helpful! Now go find your perfect bag!

No es secreto que las mujeres tenemos una debilidad por la moda (ehem yo), y para muchas esta debilidad gira un poco más en torno a los zapatos y las bolsas (eheem otra vez yo). Desde hace rato que me han preguntado acerca de las bolsas de firma y cuáles son mis favoritas, en especial por niñas buscando invertir en su primera bolsa de diseñador. Entonces decidí que la mejor forma de solucionar esto era creando una guía para ustedes de las mejores inversiones en cuanto al mundo de la moda en el sector de las bolsas.
En estudios recientes se ha comprobado que una buena bolsa de firma es igual o mejor inversión que la joyería, pero no todas las bolsas valen la pena o merecen gastarnos nuestros ahorros en ellas. Así que esto es lo que he aprendido ya sea por las buenas y por uno que otro capricho que no debí haber comprado.
Siempre clásica: Si lo que quieres es comprar tu primera “it bag” trata de ver los modelos clásicos como por ejemplo Chanel 255 (classic flap) O un must have para todos es la Louis Vuitton Speedy en monogram, esta es una súper clásica que tiene un precio más accesible (mas adelante hablamos de marcas en especifico)
Evita las bolsas y modelos “del momento” sé que es difícil mantenernos al tanto de que bolsa es la del momento, ya que vemos a las influencers favoritas cambiarlas más rápido que las camisas, para cuando la compras ya paso el estilo #NoSeVale – Por eso cuándo estas empezando tu colección y ahorrando escoge algo que no es pasajero. Escoge a tu marca favorita y de ahí su modelo clásico.
Colores Neutros: Ya sé que yo soy la primera en caer por los colores vivos y alegres, pero confieso que la mejor inversión que puedes hacer es quedarte con su color neutro y clásico. ¡Los colores, negro, hueso, beige, café, serán tus mejores amigos! Si crees que el negro es muy aburrido el gris esta súper de moda y es un neutro más moderno si se puede decir así.
Pero al igual que los modelos “trendy” ciertos colores también pasan de moda o se vuelven difíciles de usar. Con algunas excepciones como ciertas Boy Bags de Chanel o una Birkin. Nunca serán malas inversiones, pero como experiencia personal te puedes cansar del color tan especial, (ya que hayan empezado su colección con las clásicas y colores neutros entonces ya en mi opinión (EMO) puedes empezar a comprar colores divertidos.
Valor de Re-Venta: Entiendo que se puedo escuchar un poco feo pensar en revender tu bolsa cuando apenas la vas a comprar. Pero este punto es muy importante y útil al comprarla. El punto no es revenderla como tal si no que tus ahorros mantengan su valor. Piensa en tu bolsa como una inversión, si en algún memento la quisieras vender (ya sea la razón) quieres que te den lo mismo o cerca a lo que tu pagaste. Esto también las hace un artículo que nunca pasara de moda. Por esto mismo recomiendo un modelo clásico y color neutro, ambas categorías seguirán de moda por muchos años si no es que para siempre.
No a bolsas en rebaja: aunque hay algunas excepciones a esto en general recomiendo no invertir tanto en bolsas/marcas que tienden a entrar en rebaja, y más que nada por lo que mencionamos arriba (valor de reventa) si compras una bolsa en descuento no hay garantía que su valor sea bueno más Adelante. Por ejemplo, si la quieres revender por lo que tú la compraste (precio complete) o cerca, pero esta marca siempre está en descuento, pues te dirán “para que la compro si al rato la rebajan y me la compro nueva” – También aplica a las marcas con tiendas outlet. Aunque ciertas marcas como Carolina Herrera tienen outlet, pero ahí nunca encontraras sus modelos clásicos de bolsa (esta es una excepción a la regla) normalmente ellos mandan, ropa y las colecciones pasajeras.
Personalizar: este punto es un poco difícil para mí porque amo la opción de poder personalizar una bolsa con mis iniciales. Pero si pensamos en su valor de reventa, esto puede que no sea buena idea. A menos de que puedas conseguir alguien con tus mismas iniciales que quiera comprar tu bolsa (que es un poco difícil) o se la pases a tu hija, da mucha lata tratar de vender artículos personalizados. ¡Pero si es una bolsa que vas a tener para toda tu vida Adelante! Si no otra opción de personalizar es la que tiene por ejemplo LV, ellos ofrecen la personalización de colores, en lugar de iniciálales puedes agregar una tira de hasta tres colores lo cual la hará un poco más única.
¿Pero ahora cuales son las marcas que valen la pena y por qué? (Aviso, ninguna de las listas en este articulo estan por orden or rankeadas de mejor a menor, solo son grupos)
Mejor opción:
Chanel: Vamos a ser honestos, no te puedes equivocar con Chanel, la icónica marca francesa se en orgullece en ser clásica y eterna. Con algunos toques modernos. Pero al igual que todas las otras marcas no todos sus modelos valen la pena. Si lo que quieres es tu “it bag” pero también quieres que sea buena inversión piense en sus modelos como la boy bag o las Flaps (varios modelos) – Y no te sientas limitada esta es su especialidad y vas a tener mucho de donde escoger ;)
Louis Vuitton: LV se me hace de las mejores marcas para empezar tu colección, más que nada porque sus precios por sus modelos clásicos son un poco más accesibles. Y si vas a comprar una bolsa de segunda mano asegurarte de que te manden todas las etiquetas, recibos si se puede y muchas fotos. Puedes llevar las fotos y número de serie a una de las boutiques LV para que te ayuden (son súper lindos y siempre quieren ayudar) y si compras la bolsa y quieres estar segura que no te mandaron algo que no era, llévala a tienda para que te lo comprueben. Creo que el must have cualquier niña que quiere su coleccion de bolsas es una Speedy! yo de hecho tengo una Speedy tamaño 30 Bandouliere (Bandouliere= a su modelo con asa larga) la Bandouliere es un poquito mas cara que la speedy normal, pero todo depende de el uso que le daras, yo la uso mucho para viajar entonces hace sentido que tengo un asa larga para comodidad.
Hermes: Bueno Hermes siempre ha sido y será la mejor inversión que puedes hacer en el mundo de la moda. En específico sus modelos Birkin #LaReina y Kelly. Obvio si puedes conseguirlas en colores clásicos o neutros mejor, pero si no, tampoco hay problema. Lo complicado aquí es el precio, si tienes unos $10k (usd) para empezar. Y el otro problemita es la disponibilidad de las bolsas en sí, están en súper alta demanda, en estados unidos se han reportado listas de espera de hasta 2 años, en México es un poco más fácil de encontrar una boutique con modelos disponibles pero los colores y tamaños varían. En Europa puedes ahorrarte un poco en el precio por los impuestos.
Dior: La bolsa más icónica de Dior es la Lady Dior, a la fecha no ha cambiado su estilo ni pasado de moda (precio similar a una Boy Bag de Chanel) También han sacado modelos Flap (sobre) muy padre, pero EMO se parecen mucho a Chanel #Sorry aunque tampoco me molestaría tener una eh.
Goyard: esta marca francesa es una muy buena inversión y una de las excepciones a la regla de los colores neutros. Su modelo Saint Louis viene en una gran variedad de colores y mucha gente busca esos colores. El problemita son sus boutiques, que no hay tantas en el mundo en comparación con LV. Hay solo 5 ciudades en estados unidos con venta de Goyard, 1 en la ciudad de México y una en Sao Paulo, con el resto en Asia y Europa, pero puedes checar su buscador de tiendas aquí.
Saint Laurent (YSL): YSL llego un poco tarde al mundo de las “it bags” pero eso no los ha detenido en especial desde que Re-lanzaron algunos de sus modelos clásicos y sacaron nuevos. El precio por sus bolsas no es tan fuera de este mundo para la calidad y marca que te dan. De mis favoritas es la Sac du Jour (en foto abajo)
Celine: Aquí les recomiendo sus modelos Luggage y Phantom. Me encantan y son súper clásicos! su problema es que es una bolsa pesada en sí, entonces si eres de esas que cargan hasta con el molcajete (o piedras) esta bolsa te va cansar.
Gucci: Me costó trabajo poner a Gucci en esta lista porque tienen tiendas outlet muy grandes. Pero debo confesar que sus bolsas y modelos nuevos se venden como pan caliente y esos modelos en particular no están llegando al outlet. Entonces solo les recomiendo que si van a comprar una que confirmen que es una de las que no van a mandar de rebaja. ¡Ahorita la línea Marmont está de locos! No sé qué tanto dure, pero es muy buena opción.
Punto Medio (marcas buenas que no siempre son tan buena inversión)
Balenciaga: Amo sus diseños, pero tiendan a rebajarlos y he escuchado de mucha gente que sus súper colores vivos se han llegado a decolorar (a veces)
Chloe: Va de subida y en lo personal me encantan todas sus bolsas, y es una de las bolsas favoritas de las bloggers! pero me las he topado en descuento muchas veces en tiendas departamentales, y algunos de sus modelos no están manteniendo su precio de re-venta. Me encantan, pero no para gastar todos tus ahorros en ellas. (ya que hayas empezado tu colección entonces si EMO)
Givenchy: tiene modelos muy padres, pero no duran ni de moda ni en tienda, y rebajan mucho en tiendas departamentales.
Prada: ¡Tengo unos problemitas con Prada, para empezar, tienen tiendas de outlet enormes! Con muchos modelos clásicos, y la otra es que sus modelos clásicos no son tan únicos. ¡Pero! ¡Acaban de lanzar un cross body nuevo que me enamoro! ¡Así que vamos a mantenerla en la mira!
Bolsas buenas, divertidas y accesibles: A lo mejor no estas listas para “desembolsar“ tus ahorros en una pieza nueva, pero si necesitas/quieres una bolsa buena para diario o algo en específico. Estas son mis bolsas favoritas de buenas marcas sin ser de firma con precios por debajo de los $500 que también puedes conseguir rebajadas.
Tory Burch: ¡TB tiene una calidad de piel increíble! Y muchas de sus bolsas están en el rango de 300-400 usd.
Henri Bendel: ¡HB es de mi marca favorita para bolsas! ¡Tienen una increíble calidad y amo sus diseños!
Michael Kors: La verdad nunca he sido muy fan de MK en general. Siento que copia muchos modelos de los diseñadores, pero admito que tienen muy buena calidad y sus precios son bastante buenos.
Rebecca Minkoff: Tiene diseños increíbles, colores, y calidad – también tienen bolsas similares a una Boy Bag por si quieres el look, pero no el precio. La mayoría de sus bolsas están alrededor de $350.
Kate Spade: ¡La divertida! Tienen modelos súper originales como clutches de pastelitos o bolsa de palomitas. A veces si siento que están un poco caras para lo que son. Pero tienen un outlet increíble en San Marcos Texas, con súper ofertas.
En realidad, no hay una mal opción en cuanto a bolsas por que a final de cuentas todo depende en gusto y tu estilo personal. Les escribí este post pensando más en piezas en que invertir, y porque sé que a veces puede ser difícil decidir en donde o en que gastar tus ahorros. Espero les haya gustado y que les sea útil al comprar su primera (o segunda, tercera, etc..) bolsa de firma.
