KITCHEN MAKEOVER: REVEAL

We finally finished our kitchen. You basically already know we went overboard from our original plan to only repaint the kitchen lol and we regret NOTHING! Updating our kitchen had been on our list since we moved in! Our house isn’t too old but the color scheme just felt dated. Too much brown and yellow. We started by painting our walls white, personally I love stark white houses, especially since our floors are a terracotta color, not a whole lot of room to mess around with, what we wanted was to totally brighten up the house and we did. From there we moved into the kitchen and although I had always wanted to replace our counters I didn’t even consider it was in our budget, but once we realized we needed to replace our cooktop (cracked it on our Christmas dinner 3 years ago) and replace the sink we knew our granite countertops may not survive. So, it began; the full kitchen remodel. I wish I had taken better Before pics, but it all moved so fast from before paint to the big changes.
So, what exactly did we do to our kitchen? To be honest it was a fairly simple design changes that totally made it look like a brand new kitchen!
What we did:
1.- One big peninsula: this is actually a huge issue here in texas and in the US; builders love making counter peninsulas in two heights, and I get it works for some but honestly it eats up and cuts the space down, plus the high part is usually very narrow and not very comfortable to actually eat on. So, we leveled our peninsula to one height making it all counter height instead of bar height and OMG! Makes everything look so much bigger, and we can actually now eat on it, more of a full eat in kitchen, plus we were able to get it cut in one big piece so the natural stone really stands out.
2.- Light colors: unless you have tons of light, huge kitchen, and lighter color floors. A darker color combo (also love) in your kitchen can make It feel like a cave lol at least for me. Our kitchen is actually more in the center of the house, so no direct windows, just the ones from the family room. And since we love white we just rolled with it. Used Sherwin Williams Pearly white for cabinets (if you can repaint your cabinets you’ll save a lot of money) Chantilly Lace from Benjamin moore for walls. Both white but pearly white has a bit of a grey undertone to make it pop a tiny bit from the walls, and in the end, went for a light grey on the island. Sherwin Williams Dorian Grey
3.- simple design: again because of the shape of our kitchen we don’t have huge walls or space for backsplash so instead of cramping up a statement tile on it we went with a plain white marble to keep it bright and open, but instead gave it texture and movement with the herringbone pattern. We also loved our counters and wanted that to pop.
4.- New Sink: this was on my list since before moving in lol, I’m so glad we didn’t do it before and actually with the whole remodel. It’s perfect with the new countertops.
5.- Clean new counters: personally, I love clean and not too busy counters. We ended up picking a dolomite stone. We were tempted to go with quartz because of it durability but I’m a sucker for natural stone and the shapes and movements they have. We didn’t consider marble much because it's a big investment and we're not sure if we'll be staying here forever, and you have to be more careful with it, I love marble but not there yet lol. Dolomite is in between marble and granite. It’s harder than marble but not as hard as granite. We did however seal it to protect it and will be careful with staining foods (ehem wine)
6.- hardware: Updated to clean simple more modern hardware. We’re actually switching out all of our door handles to black matte modern. Actually had picked out a champagne gold door pulls at first that sort of matched the new faucet, we installed half of them and … nope lol … it was a weird effect it may be the detail on our cabinets but gold gave it a hint of 90s kitchen lol. So, we went with Black matte to match the new door handles around the house and YES! Perfect balance between classic and modern. We did leave the Gold faucet since it’s a nice statement and we have a lot of gold décor around the house.
7.- New Décor: With a new color scheme came new décor hehe, switched out our pendant lights, and stools for counter chairs. I had been eyeing these serena and lily chairs for years! They are on the pricey side and since I knew eventually down the line we would fix up the kitchen, I never really took the plunge lol and I’m glad because it is an investment and what if the color I bought for our previous kitchen wouldn’t have fit a newer design. Of course, also switched out all the little kitchen gadgets like canisters, tool holder, etc.

¡Bueno pues ahora si terminamos nuestra cocina!
¡Obvio ya saben si me siguieron en Instagram estos últimos meses que lo que empezó como una pintadita de paredes en la casa termino y una remodelación completa de cocina, y valió la pena! Pero tampoco crean que fue todo culpa de la cuarentena eh, esto es algo que teníamos planeado desde que nos mudamos a esta casa, al mudarnos como les conté en el video, tuvimos que hacer varios arreglos para poder vivir en ella y no quisimos ni tocar la cocina y que bueno. Nuestra casa no es que sea vieja nada mas era muy oscura por la gama de colores que tenía, todo, absolutamente todo era café y amarillo, paredes, techo, granitos y cubiertas, gabinetes y piso jajá. Empezamos con las paredes las repintamos todo de blanco, yo soy fan de las casas blancas en general y por el tono de pisos que tenemos (que no es opción cambiar por ahora) no me quise arriesgar mucho con otros colores, el piso un tipo color barro o terracota. Lo que queríamos era darle más luz a la casa y eso fue lo que hicimos, después no pasamos a la cocina y por el momento solo íbamos a pintar los gabinetes de blanco, que la verdad si se hubiera visto bien con los tonos que tenía, no habíamos ni considerado en hacer la cocina complete todo de un jalón, pero cuando nos dimos cuenta que había que cambiar lavabo y estufa (que tronamos hace unas navidades jajá) sabíamos que nuestro granito no sobreviviría e igualarlo estaría difícil. Y de ahí se desato toda la obra. Me arrepentí mucho de no tomar mejores fotos del “antes” pero como solo iba ser pintura no tomo a detalles y de ahí todo se fue muy rápido. En fin
que hicimos?
1.- una sola barra grande: Esto es un “problema” o “moda” que veo mucho en las casas aquí en Texas, hacen las barras de doble altura, que a lo mejor esta practico para algunos, pero yo la odiaba, la verdad era súper incómoda para comer porque la parte alta era muy angosta, y la parte baja se sentía más justa. ¡Decidimos rasurar la barra completa a una misma altura, y WOW el cambio! Inmediatamente nos dio amplitud y una sensación de que todo está más abierto, y obvio mucho más practica y funcional. Ahora si podemos comer ahí jajá
2.- Colores Claros: como les decía la casa era muy oscura, y nuestra cocina esta más al centro de la casa entonces sentíamos que no le llegaba mucha luz directa. Si tu cocina es así y metes tonos tan oscuros hace que se sienta como cueva (y no crean amo las cocinas negras o grises siempre y cuando tengas el espacio y luz correcta. En fin, ya habíamos pintado las paredes (benjamín Moore: chantilly Lace) los gabinetes se pintaron de Sherwin Williams Pearly White, también blanco, pero con subtonos grises TIP: NO PINTES TUS GABINETES DEL MISMO COLOR QUE LAS PAREDES, AUNQUE SEA MINIMA LA DIFERENCIA PERO QUE SI SEAN DIFERENTES)
y la isla termino siendo gris para romper tanto blanco. Usamos Sherwin Williams Dorian Grey. Para ahorrar dinero trata de pintar o reusar lo más que se pueda de tus gabinetes
3.- Diseño sencillo: como no es una cocina así enorme o muy abierta y no nos quisimos meter a tirar paredes. La zona del backsplash no es muy grande entonces en lugar de tratar de amontonar un diseño muy elaborado escogimos en mismos tonos blancos, pero en forma chevron o herringbone que le dio movimiento y textura.
4.- Lavabo y llave nuevo: esto estaba en mi lista desde que nos mudamos y quedo perfecto con los colores y las cubiertas nuevas.
5.- Cubiertas sin color: La verdad nuestro granito anterior tenía mucho color y yo prefiero que todo sea más uniforme me da la sensación de limpieza. Consideramos mucho el cuarzo que es súper recomendado para cocina, yo amo los diseños naturales del mármol, pero es mas delicado y es mucho mas caro, es una super inversion que no creemos sea buen gasto, ya que no sabemos si nos cambiamos de casa en un futuro, y la verdad granito ya no me llamaba tanto. Terminamos encontrando usando Dolomita. Parece mármol, es piedra natural, pero es entre mármol y granito. Más fuerte y duradero que el mármol, pero no tan resistente como el granito. Si usamos un sellador y obvio tener cuidado con cosas como el vino.
6.- Herrajes: aquí casi la regamos jajá había comprado y prácticamente instalado puras jaladeras doradas para los gabinetes, pero al momento que lo vi todo montado no me encanto. No sé si el diseño de nuestras puertas o que, pero se veía medio 90s entonces optamos por cambiarlas por negras mate, que de hecho hemos estado cambiando todas las manijas de nuestras puertas en la casa por este estilo entonces quedo perfecta.
7.- Decoración: y bueno claro cambiamos ciertos artículos de cocina como el frutero, frascos etc. Lámparas nuevas y sillas, ya que se podía usar más como mesa preferimos lago más cómodo. Estas sillas son mis favoritas seguro las han visto ya en Instagram. Si son caras, pero tenía ya años cazándolas.
Y bueno eso fue toda la verdad aprovechamos al máximo lo que ya tuvimos y nos dio un súper resultado. Nada de esta cocina fue regalado ni en colaboración abajo les dejo las tiendas que usamos y links, si quieren alguna recomendación más mándenme mensaje por Instagram.
